Everest Base Camp Trek via Gokyo Lakes

  • 17 Days
  • Guest: 2+

Overview

This trek allows the adventurous to enjoy the breadth of what the Khumbu region has to offer. Often considered a side trip from the trail to Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Valley is a gem among Nepal’s “hidden valleys.” Home to the world’s highest string of freshwater lakes, the largest glacier in Nepal Ngozumba, and perhaps the best 360 degree panorama in the region from the summit of Gokyo Ri. This trek is a challenging exploration of the Khumbu region, its Sherpa culture, monasteries tucked within the clouds, the demanding Cholo La Pass at 5367m, the spectacular vista from Kalapathar, and of course a visit to Everest Base Camp.

Trip Note:

This trekking route has been chosen with attention to preventing AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) through adequate time for acclimatization via a gradual ascent. With this in mind, know that trekking to Everest base camp will prove to be strenuous, involving an average 7 hours daily of walking on varying terrain at high altitudes. The route via Gokyo Lakes is an especially challenging one – expect for more than a few hard slogs and a real test of fortitude as you approach the mighty Cholo La. The best seasons for this trek are Spring (Mar – May) and Autumn (Sep – Nov), providing for sunny days and cold (but not freezing) nights. Keep in mind that these are obviously the seasons with the most traffic on the trails. The winter and summer seasons will appeal to those who yearn for a more private experience. Winter season (late Dec – Feb) can bring some beautifully crisp days, but the temperatures can be well below freezing at higher altitudes. Summer season (Jun – Jul) is usually doused in monsoon rain, but the vegetation will be exceptionally lush.

Shortly after we’ll reach the lakes Taboche Tsho and Gokyo Cho, on whose banks the village of Gokyo sits under the towering peak of Cho Oyu. Prepare yourself for scenery beyond your wildest imagination.

We’ll descend for a short hike to our overnight spot at Thaknak near the Ngozumba glacier.

The grey rock outcropping of Kala Pattar makes an appearance as we crest a ridge and ascend into Gorak Shep. After a rest and a good lunch, we follow the boulder-strewn trail to Everest Base Camp at the base of the Khumbu icefall. After celebrating our accomplishment at this famous spot, we return to Gorak Shep as the sun sets over the rugged beauty of our surroundings.

An unforgettable panorama including the expansive Khumbu glacier and a vast number of peaks, including the mighty Mt. Everest, can be seen from this famous viewpoint. Crossing the Dudh Koshi over a suspension bridge decorated with hundreds of prayer flags, we pass through pine forests on a winding trail until our steep descent into Namche Bazaar.

Day 15: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla: 6 – 8 hours walk

A steep and rocky descent will test our stamina as we depart Namche Bazaar. Eventually the trail levels out after several river crossings and we arrive in the agriculture-rich Khumbu foothills. Passing a number of colorful Buddhist settlements we arrive at our final destination in Lukla.
