Gokyo Lakes And Gokyo Ri Trek

  • 14 Days
  • Guest: 2+

Overview

Gokyo Valley is a gem among the Khumbu region’s attractions, home to Ngozumpa, Nepal’s largest glacier, and a string of stunningly azure glacial lakes. Tremendous views of the four 8000 meter peaks of Everest, Cho Oyo, Lhotse, and Makalu are ever present during this journey. A day’s excursion will take us to the top of Gokyo Ri, at 5357 meters, from which perhaps the most breathtaking panorama in the region can be enjoyed. At 5000 meters above sea level, the Gokyo lakes are the world’s highest freshwater lake system. We’ll experience the culture of the high-altitude dwelling residents of the tiny settlement at Gokyo, and take in some of the best scenery in the Khumbu region along the way.

Trip Note:

This trekking route has been chosen with attention to preventing AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) through adequate time for acclimatization via a gradual ascent. The journey to Gokyo Valley is considered a moderate hike, involving an average 6 – 8 hours daily of walking on varying terrain. The challenging climb to Gokyo Ri is optional, but the view is definitely worth it! The best seasons for this trek are Spring (Mar – May) and Autumn (Sep – Nov), providing for sunny days and cold (but not freezing) nights. Keep in mind that these are obviously the seasons with the most traffic on the trails. The winter and summer seasons will appeal to those who yearn for a more private experience. Winter season (late Dec – Feb) can bring some beautifully crisp days, but the temperatures can be well below freezing at higher altitudes. Summer season (Jun – Jul) is usually doused in monsoon rain, but the vegetation will be exceptionally lush.
