Makalu Trek

  • 21 Days
  • Guest: 2+

Overview

Makalu is a less often visited region lying in the eastern part of Nepal. It is home to Makalu Barun National Park, the world’s only protected area with an elevation increase of over 8000m. Mt. Makalu is the world’s fifth highest peak at 8463m. This area contains 16 other notable peaks, and a wide array of terrain and ecological zones, ranging from the lush subtropical Arun Valley, to terraced farmlands, alpine meadows, and snowcapped mountain ridges. The tremendous variations in altitude in this region provide for spectacular bio-diversity, varying climatic conditions, and an experience that will continually surprise you. Over 20 different ethnic groups dwell in the Makalu region, each speaking their own dialect – a fascinating aspect in its own right. The trek to Makalu base camp, one of the world’s highest base camps at 5000m, is a journey of immense scenic variety and ecological diversity. We will pass through the subtropical jungles of the Arun valley, home to an amazing variety of orchids and a flourishing bird population. We’ll visit mountain lakes and make several high passes, emerging into pristine alpine highlands with tremendous views of Everest, Lhotse, Khumbakarna, and Mt. Makalu itself. Our route will take us on a trail-less-traveled through terraced farmlands and remote settlements, ascending to a challenging pass across Shipton La at 4229m, from where we will access the south side of the mighty Makalu.

Package Highlights:

This trekking route has been chosen with attention to preventing AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) through adequate time for acclimatization via a gradual ascent. Our itinerary includes several rest days, which we will utilize for proper acclimatization. This trip is considered difficult due to extended periods of walking at higher altitudes. Expect 6 – 8 hours daily walking at altitudes above 4000 meters for much of the journey. Those who are in good physical conditioning will enjoy this trek the most. Best seasons to do this trek are Autumn (Aug – Nov) and Spring (March – May). Snowfall and excessive cold may discourage trekkers during the winter months, and heavy rains can be expected during the monsoon (Jun – mid August).
